Note 1 Contains Le théatre du monde (on the miseries of mankind) and Discours de l'excellence et dignité de l'homme, both largely compiled from classical and early Christian authors.
Note 2 Reprint of one of the editions published in Paris (Le théatre du monde: J. Longis et Rob. Le Maignier, 1558; Vincent Sertenas, 1559; Robinot, 1560; Bref discours de l'excellence et dignité de l'homme: Jean Longis, 1559). On these French editions, cf. Brunet, I, Column 983.
Note 3 The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 89, gives following details about 'Theatre du Monde 12⁰': the printing of sheet AB was paid 1 florins Carolus guilders 9 stuivers on 9 May [1565]. There must have been an interruption in the making of the book: the five following sheets were composed and printed from 24 November till 8 December [1565] at a cost of 11 florins Carolus guilders Finally the last 5½ sheets were started on 15 December [1565] and entered for 12 florins Carolus guilders 3 stuivers The total costs for composing and printing were, consequently, 24 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers (for some unknown reason changed into 24 florins Carolus guilders 13 stuivers). Of the work 1,550 copies were printed. As each copy contains 11½ sheets, 36 reams of paper were needed. This 'papier de Rouen' was worth 15 stuivers per ream, but as some 'mains de dessus et dessous' had been damaged, the price was brought to 16 stuivers per ream, bringing the costs for the paper to 28 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers and the overall costs to 53 florins Carolus guilders 9 stuivers
Note 4 From the dates given it is clear that this 1565-edition was in fact brought on the market in the opening days of 1566.
Note 5 Listed in M 296, folio 19r (Theatre du monde 12⁰ fra[nçois] A⁰ -, f[euilles] 10½ [= in fact 11½], [price:] stuivers 1½).
