Note 1Books I, II, IV and V are a critical study of a number of passages of Plautus and other classical authors. Book III, dedicated to L. Carrio, gives the description of a meal in Roman style. It is a thoroughly revised version of the one figuring in the first chapter of book II of Variarum lectionum libri IIII, 1569 (cf. the details given in BB, III, page 993). This same book III contains also a Latin poem of 75 verses on Lipsius's garden and flowers.
Note 2The material for books I, II, IV, and V was collected by Lipsius in Rome (1568-1570). He composed the text after his return in the Netherlands (1570-1572). He often wrote to friends in 1570, 1571, and 1572 about the publication of this continuation of the Variae lectiones of 1569, but it was not until the end of 1574 (between 15 October and 20 November), that he actually forwarded the manuscript to Plantin. Cf.
Note 3The book was printed before November 1575: on the 23rd of that month S. Winandus Pighius acknowledged the receipt of some books sent to him by Plantin, including a copy of the Antiquae lectiones (Corr., V, no. 677).
Note 4Listed in M 296, folio 9v (8º, 1575, f[euilles] 12, [price:] stuivers 3).
