Masius 'quibus editionis Graecae, Historiae Iosuae ratio modusque omnis, per capita et versus explicatur' (pages 125-154), preceded by a 'Praefatio Andreae Masiae in Graecam editionem Iosuae, atq. annotationes suas' (pages 118-124); c) With a new numeration: 'Commentarii in Iosuam' (pages 7-350), preceded by a 'praefatio' (pages 1-7); d) A necrological note on Andreas Masius (who died on 7 April 1573), with interesting biographical details, by Henricus a Weze, councillor to the Duke of Cleves, in the form of a letter to Plantin, 15 April 1573. |
Note 2 | Masius contacted Plantin on this edition as early as 1570 - and the publication was quite willingly accepted by Plantin (letter to Masius, 27 February 1570 [Corr., III, no. 361]: 'Et lors s'il vous plaist je seray prest d'imprimer vostre Josua par quoy pourrés envoyer l'exemplaire quand il vous plaira pour cependant le faire visiter et en obtenir les privilèges'; letter to Masius, 17 September 1571 [Ibidem, no. 371]: 'J'ay délivré vostre billet à mond. gendre pour le joindre au catalogue de vos livres à la fin de vostre Josué', the printing of which, however, Plantin could not start before having finished the Polyglot-Bible - hopely in January 1572; letter to Masius, 29 October 1571 [Ibidem, no. 373]: 'Quant à vostre Josua il est passé quelques semaines à la cour pour en impétrer le privilège, et l'ayant receu je tascherai de tout mon pouvoir à le mectre en oeuvre'). The privilege was granted on 22 November 1571, but very likely the printing was now postponed owing to the liturgical editions Plantin had to produce in those years for Philip II. It was probably the death of his friend who incited the typographer to put finally on his presses Masius's work, forwarded to him so long ago. This, in any case, can be deduced from a letter of Plantin to Henricus Olearius, chancellor of the Duke of Cleves, 9 November 1573 (Corr., IV, no. 493). |
Note 3 | On 6 February 1574 Plantin told Stephanus Winandus Pighius that he hoped to have Masius's book finished before the next [Frankfurt Lent-] Fair (Corr., IV, no. 513). In a letter of 27 February - 1 March 1574 to Alanus Copus Plantin could say that the 'opus Masii' would be achieved within 15 days (Corr., IV, no. 526). According to the colophon the printing was actually finished on 7 March 1574. |
