Note 1Contains: a) A history of the county of Flanders (pages 3 [= for 5] - 24), a description of the administrative territories of the county and of its institutions (pages 24-39), and of the wars it had waged through the centuries (pages 40-59), followed by a list of the counts of Flanders in the form of a table (pages [60-61]); b) Poems celebrating each of the counts of Flanders (pages 62-86).
Note 2A first short history of the Counts of Flanders by Marchantius had been published in Louvain in 1557 under the title De rebus gestis a Flandriae comitibus. Plantin's 1567-edition is much enlarged. A new, revised and enlarged edition, Flandria commentariorum lib. IIII descripta…, was issued by the Plantin Press in 1596.
Note 3The Plantin-edition of 1567 has been reprinted in 1580 in Frankfurt by Feyerabent (cf. Biographie Nationale [de Belgique], 13, Column 447).
Note 4According to the colophon the printing was finished in March 1567.
Note 5The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 115, gives the following details about 'De reb. flandriae memorab. Marchantii': the wages for composing and printing are entered on 1 March 1567 and amount to 9 florins Carolus guilders As each copy contains 5½ sheets and as 800 copies were printed, 10 reams (including the 'imperfections') of paper 'à la grande coronne' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers per ream, came to 11 florins Carolus guilders, bringing the overall costs to 20 florins Carolus guilders 'which means ½ stuivers a copy'.
