| Note 2 | The first edition (Les quatre premiers livre [sic] de la Franciade) was published in Paris in 1572; another (Les quatre premiers livres de la Franciade, reveue, corrigée et augmentée) followed in 1573 (cf. Cioranesco, page 611, nos. 19389 and 19390). It may be assumed that a Parisian competitor had the work quickly reprinted, but to avoid difficulties with the French authorities regarding the violation of the privilege(s) of his colleague(s), preferred to issue his publication under the name of a Netherlandish typographer. |
