Note 1 | The copy in Museum Plantin-Moretus contains only pages 1-6 (= for 16), that is the poem 'La Flandre à Monseigneur', but, as the title-page also specifies 'Plus XIIII Sonnetz Françoys, et quelques Vers Latins', it may be accepted that the text was in fact identical to the one described in the following no. |
Note 2 | In the following no. the work is presented as an anonymous publication, without name of author or printer. It may be surmised that Plantin had originally the intention to have it published as described here, with full name of author and his own printer's address duly given, but that finally, owing to the growing animosity at Antwerp against Duke Francis, he preferred to have the title-page changed and to issue the work anonymously (correcting at the same time an error in the pagination: 6 into 16). |
Note 3 | The work must have been on the market in August or early September 1582, as by mid-September a number of copies had already reached Paris - where their sale was far from meeting a great success (letter of P. Porret to Plantin, 18 September 1582 [Corr., VII, no. 989, page 63]: 'Vous m'avés aussi envoyé demi cent des poesies la Flandre a Monseigneur qui sont livres dequoy on ne tient conte…'). |
