| Note 3 | Seems to be an editio princeps. In 1581 Plantin printed two other treatises of Sanctius (probably at the same time; one, in any case, also finished in September 1581). It is rather curious that, at the height of the revolt of the Netherlands against Spain, Plantin printed these studies of a Spanish professor. This was very likely at the intervention of Plantin's former employee, Joannes Pulmannus, who wished to establish himself as a bookseller in Salamanca. He had been in Spain in 1580-81, had returned to Antwerp for a brief period to be with his dying father, the scholar and Plantin's good friend Theodorus Pulmannus, and was in December 1581 preparing his return to Salamanca. On 17 December 1581 Plantin wrote to Sanctius a formal letter of recommendation in favour of Joannes Pulmannus, but from the context of the accompanying letter it is clear that Pulmannus had been in close relations with Sanctius and that he would take a number of copies of Sanctius's publications with him to Spain (Corr., VII, no. 965). It may even be supposed that Pulmannus actually commissioned the editions, with the intention to sell them directly in Spain. |
