Note 1 | In M 296, folio 1 verso, is listed '[ABC pour apprendre a escrire en francois, 4⁰, f. 7, stuivers 1¼; Idem en flameng . . . ] Idem sonder scrift, ffeuilles] 7, [price:] stuivers 1'. The same annotation in M 164, folio 2 verso. The manuscript catalogue made by Jan Moretus for his father-in-law in 1575, Index librorum qui Antverpiæ in officina Christophori Plantini excusi sunt (shown in Museum Plantin-Moretus, room 15), details furthermore: '[ABC oft Exempelen om de kinderen bequamelijck te leeren scrijven. In 4.] De selfste daer anders niet in inne staet dan de voorletteren van den ABC, den schoolmeesters gerieflick om Exempelen by te scrijven. In 4.' (meaning: [ABC or examples to teach children to write adequately]. Item in which only the letters of the ABC stand and is convenient for schoolmasters to write examples next to it. In-4⁰) The ABC mentioned in the catalogues was printed in 1568 in a Dutch version (see under Heyns, no. cp013123), and in a French version (see preceding no.), an in quarto oblong with large woodcut-initials and texts in Dutch or French. The version 'sonder scrift' must only have had the initials, without corresponding texts, to allow the schoolmasters (or the pupils) to add written examples of their own. The author of the note in Bib. Belgica (1964–1970 éd.), III, page 450, describes such an edition (with French title-page; very likely publications with Dutch title-page were also issued), but without referring to a depot. Cf. on this publication also M. Sabbe, Peeter Heyns en de Nimfen uit den Lauwerboom, Antwerp, s.d. (cf. bibliography under Heyns), page 100. |
