Note 1 | Variant of preceding no.: part of quire A (A1-A5, pages 1-10), including the title-page, is in a different composition. |
Note 2 | The reason for resetting the first part of quire A is not very clear. The text on pages 3-10 is identical. The only important difference is in the title-page, where in this copy the mention 'Eiusdem novissima descriptio' (= meaning that Plantin's publication is in fact a second edition) does not figure. It may, consequently, be supposed that Plantin issued at first Possevinus's treatise with the simple title 'Moscovia Antonii Possevini Societatis Iesu', but that, either at his own initiative, but more likely following a remark of d'Assonleville, he had part of quire A reset in order to specify on the title-page that his publication was in fact a second edition. If this supposition is exact then the edition as specified here came out first; the copies not yet sold must shortly afterwards have had the first part of quire A replaced by the new one, including the title-page as described in the preceding no. |
