Online bibliographical references
Note 1 Contains two 'carmina heroica': the first on the life of St. Benedictus of Nursia (pages 7-15), the second 'Malchus Maroniades' or The Fugitive Monk, compiled from St. Hieronymus (16-39).
Note 2 Jean Sarrazin, Abbot of St. Vaast at Arras, to whom the work is dedicated, approached as early as 1586 Plantin for an edition of the life of St. Benedictus and of 'l'histoire de Malchus', each to be illustrated with fifty intaglio-prints. In a letter of 30 April 1586 Plantin carefully details the huge costs of such a project (Corr., VII, no. 1094). In Plantin's later letters to Sarrazin nothing more is said of this edition: the attention of the abbot became centered upon the publication of an other work of Carpenteius, the In vaticinia Isaiae…paraphrasis (see preceding no.). However, probably to do a favour for the powerful abbot, Plantin also printed - but without illustrations - the Vita S. Benedicti and the Malchus Maroniades, published in one volume.
Note 3 Listed in M 321 (f[euilles] 5, [price:] stuivers 2). Under In vaticinia Isaiae…, however, the Vita S. Benedicti is noted as a kind of appendix. It may be surmised that in fact the Vita S. Benedicti was normally sold together with the In vaticinia Isaiae
