Note 1 | First edition of this philosophical discussion on the happiness of life between: Guarino di Verona, Facius's professor; Panormita, one of his friends; and Joannes Lamola, a renowned rhetorician. It was reprinted, together with Felini Sandei Ferrariensis de rebus Siciliae et Apuliae epitome and some other studies, at Hanau, 1611. |
Note 2 | In the note about the book (folio [8 verso]) it is explained that the 'Facii dialogus' consists in fact of two parts, the second being on Goodness and its characteristics ('Secunda vero quid Summum bonum et in quo consistat ostendit'), but only the first part has been reproduced. |
Note 3 | More details about the genesis of the book are given by Plantin in the dedicatory to Christopher Haller. The printer explains that he received the manuscript of Facius's work from Jacobus Gisellinus, 'alumnus Academiae Lovaniensis', for printing it. Plantin asked the advice of some friends, including Joannes Crombetius, former 'pedagogus' of Haller's children. At the urging of Crombetius he dedicated the publication to Haller. In that same dedicatory a biographical note on Facius is given, together with a list of his works. |
Note 4 | On 18 February 1556 Plantin sold 6 'Bart. facius de vitae felicitate' to Martin Nutius, Antwerp publisher, for 7½ stuivers (Arch. 38, folio 4 verso). |
Note 5 | Listed in M 296, folio 2 recto (Bartholom[eus] facius de vitȩ felicitate, 8⁰, a⁰ 1556, f[euilles] 10, [price:] stuivers 1¼), and M 164, folio 3 verso. |
