Note 1 Treatise on what was taught on christian institutions in the sodalitas or Jesuit Congregation of the Blessed Virgin at Cologne (founded by Costerus in 1575, modelled after those existing already at Rome, Paris, and Douai). Contains also at the end of the 4th book (pages 363-371) a Latin poem by Andreas Frusius (De Agno Dei, carmen Andreae Frusii, Societatis Iesu).
Note 2 The first edition, without name of author, appeared at Cologne in 1576 under the title Bulla super forma iuramenti professionis fidei cum piis et christianis institutionibus, in usum sodalitatis B. Mariae Virginis (new edition in 1578). Published, with minor changes, under the title Piarum et christ. institutionum libri tres in usum sodalitatis B. Mariae Virginis primum conscripti, nunc vero omnium christianorum pietati ac devotioni destinati…, at Cologne in 1578. New editions - with changes - under this title in 1583, Cologne, and 1585, Liège. First edition - again with changes - under the title Libellus sodalitatis… and with the name of the author, Cologne, Goswinus Cholinus, 1586 (Cf. BB, I, pages 853-856).
Note 3 Plantin's edition is a reprint of the Cologne 1586-publication, with some minor alterations: the undated foreword by Costerus replaces the one dated July 1585 in the Cologne 1586-edition. This new foreword is more elaborate than the one it replaces. Besides explaining why sodalitates were founded at Rome, Paris, Douai, Cologne, etc., Costerus gives also details about the genesis of the Libellus: how it was first published under the title Bulla…for the benefit only of the Cologne sodalitas; how the author, seeing his work reprinted many times and translated into several languages, decided to enlarge his text, to publish it under his name and to dedicate it to all the sodalitates of the Blessed Virgin.
Note 4 It may be surmised that this revised edition was arranged by Plantin with Costerus during the latter's stay at Antwerp, 1585-1586.
Note 5 Listed in M 321 (8⁰, f[euilles] 33; [price:] stuivers 10). M 321 lists sub 1587 a similar in 8⁰-edition, which is otherwise unknown: very likely the scribe made a confusion with the 1586 in 8⁰-edition, he had already noted in 1586.
