Note 1 | Edition of the Decrees of the Council of Trente, with in appendix (pages [393-437]) a number of documents emanating from Pope Pius IV, and the 'oratio' with which the ninth and last session of the Council was closed on 3-4 December 1563. |
Note 2 | First edition of the Decrees by Plantin. Other Antwerp publishers had already brought editions on the market in 1564, 1565 and 1566 (cf. de Clercq, page 190), but Plantin made some improvements: he added marginal notes quoting the sources on which the Decrees had drawn and their references. These notes were supplied by Joannes Soteallus (Soteaux, of Mons; professor in Holy Scripture at the Abbey of Cambron) and Horatius Lutius, a lawyer, as stated on the title-page and as explained in more detail by Plantin in the foreword to the reader (page [3]). The approbatio given by Hunnaeus (page [351]) refers only to these 'annotationes ad marginem'. Cf. also de Clercq, page 190. |
Note 3 | At least part of the edition was printed by Hendrik Alsens, a former compositor of Plantin who had established himself as a master-printer in 1568 and often worked for Plantin in those years: Alsens received, on 17 October 1570, 7 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers for 9 reams of printed paper, consisting of the quires 'aa - bb - cc Concilii Tridentini' (= being the appendix with the documents emanating from pope Pius IV: pages [393-438]) (Arch. 31, folio 91r). Nine reams for 3 sheets means that 1,500 copies were printed. |
Note 4 | Listed in M 296, folio 3r (Concilium Tridentinum in 8⁰, f[euilles] 28½, [price:] stuivers 6), and M 164, folio 6r (f[euilles] 28). |
