Edition information | |
Illustrations | Copper engravings, c. 57 × c. 38, representing saints or scenes from the New Testament celebrated on fixed calendar-days, designed by Pieter van der Borcht and engraved by P. Uten Waele. The plates of the 1580-edition (see no. cp013308) were used, with a few changes, but as the lines must have been blurred the plates were retouched which give them a darker and less attractive outlook, whilst often details were altered. Note 1 | Reprint of the 1580-edition, which it faithfully reproduces, with only minor changes. Some plates - especially the doubles - are reproduced in other places (pages 9, 27, 135, 143, 223, 245). In the 1580-edition the illustration for page 145 was inadvertantly reproduced on page 189 and vice-versa; this error has been corrected in the 1584-edition. The illustrations on pages 63 and 187 have been remade (no monograms of designer or engraver figure on these new versions), but whilst the illustration on page 63 is completely different in design, the new engraving on page 187 is a reversed version of the older one. |
Note 2 | 1,000 copies were printed of the 'Calendarium Sanctorum' (Arch. 788). |
Note 3 | Not listed in M 321. It is possible that the entries in Ms. 296, folio 3r, and M 164, folio 6r (see no. cp013308) also refer to this 1584-edition. |
Note 4 | The Evangeliorum dominicalium summaria sanctorumque historiae were also reprinted in 1584 (see no. cp011778), very likely to go with the Imagines, and to be sold together. |
