| Note 2 | Galle published at the end of 1578 a large map of the Netherlands, detailing the struggle against Philip II, with an accompanying Latin text commenting in loose and short notes the principal events (no copies of the map are known, but the text - Brevis rerum in Belgio ab anno 1566 usque ad annum 79 gestarum designatio - was reprinted in the Annales, sive Historiae rerum Belgicarum, published in Frankfurt by Sigismund Feyerabend, 1580: description of the events till 20 October 1578). Galle tells about this map with accompanying Latin text in the dedicatory to John of Burgundy, and continues to explain that immediately after the publication of the map he was asked to provide a Dutch and a French translation of the Latin text. In the note 'Philippe Galle au lecteur debonnaire' in the French edition (this note to the reader is not reproduced in the Dutch version), Galle gives additional details: that he was explicitly asked to publish the Dutch and French translations in the form of a booklet in order to oblige the people who had not enough space to attach [on a wall] the map with its annotations, or who preferred to check more easily the text with the map. |

| Note 4 | Galle commissioned Plantin to print his text. The financial transactions are detailed in Arch. 18, folio 282, but in a rather confused way. Plantin supplied on 10 April 1579 100 copies 'sommier discours flamen' (worth 3 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers), on 22 April 50 'Discours flamen' (worth 1 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers), on 4 May 100 'Cort verhael' (worth 3 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers), on 7 May 25 'Cort verhael' (worth 18¾ stuivers), on 15 May 50 'Cort verhael' (worth 1 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers). Finally, on 1 June, he supplied another 100 copies 'Cort verhael', which, together with the 325 copies of the Dutch edition already forwarded to Galle, and specified above, were entered for 11 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers As for the French editions: are only noted on 21 March 100 'sommaire annotations' (worth 3 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers). A rather cryptic note, on Galle's credit-side, about 1 June 1579, let it be understood that, of the total sum owed by Galle for the printing, 30 florins Carolus guilders were remitted to Galle to even the overall account between the engraver and the typographer (which stood then: 179 florins Carolus guilders 18½ stuivers to be paid by Plantin, 209 florins Carolus guilders 18½ stuivers to be paid by Galle), and that in all 5 editions in French and Dutch had been issued ('Item pour accord avec C. Plantin doibt avoir [30 florins Carolus guilders] lesquels sont pour les discours imprimez depuis le commencement qu'ils sont venus en lumière iusques à présent pour 5 impressions tant francois que flameng à 2 lb. par impression que ledit Galle a par accord avec C. Plantin sans qu'il débourse rien de impression ou papier, etc.'). |
| Note 4 | The note in Plantin's ledger specifies thus that, until about 1 June 1579, 5 editions in French and Dutch were issued. Three variants of Galle's Sommaire annotation are known (see following nos.), and the 'livre des ouvriers' seems to indicate that at least two Dutch editions were also put on the market. For composing the text of the 'Cort verhael' Andries Spors was paid on 4 April (for the quires AB) and 11 April (for the quires CD), and then again on 25 April 1579 for ABCD 'Cort verhael', meaning consequently that he composed twice the same text in Dutch (Arch. 32, folio 296). The wages for printing his second contribution in 1,500 copies were paid on 25 April (quires ACD) and 2 May (quire B) (Arch. 32, folios 236 and 252). The printing of the French editions is more difficult to reconstruct (only reference found [Arch. 32, folio 296]: A. Spors paid on 18 April 1579 for composing quires ABC of 'Somier [= Sommaire] de Galle'). |
