Note 1 | Same edition as preceding no., but with some changes in the illustrations: a) New title-page, 146 × 111: without the mention 'G de Jode excu' and the year 1584; b) Three new illustrations, nos. 17, 33, and 64. The typographical texts are identical. |
Note 2 | The new title-page and the three illustrations are inspired by but not copied from the ones in the other edition, and appear in mirror-image. Stylistically they look to be the work of Pieter van der Borcht. |
Note 3 | To the colophon in the Antwerp copy has been added in ink '1580'. Consequently, the year 1580 has sometimes been advanced. |
Note 4 | To all probability, however, the date of the edition has to be placed later, after the publication of the other version. It may be supposed that G. de Jode had in a first edition used only part of the sheets printed by Plantin. When he decided to issue a second edition with the remaining sheets, he must have discovered that the title-page and three illustrations were no more available and had them replaced by similar plates (very likely executed by P. van der Borcht). The variant as described here must, consequently, have been published in or after 1585. |
