Note 1 | Reprint of the 1575-edition. The dedicatory and the foreword to the reader by Antonius Senensis, figuring in the 1569-edition but deleted in the 1575-edition, have been added again. |
Note 2 | In a letter to F. Lucas, 3 December 1585 (Corr., VII, no. 1049, page 226) Plantin let it be understood that the Summa, together with some other important publications, was finished before the 'reconciliation' (= capitulation of Antwerp to the army of Philip II in August 1585). It is anyway significative that in none of the volumes Plantin is qualified 'architypographus regius' (a title he resumed after August 1585). Moreover, in vol. I the dedicatory of Antonius Senensis to Dom Antonio of the 1569-edition has been reproduced - something Plantin (or his representatives in Antwerp) would not have dared to do after the capitulation, as Dom Antonio was more than ever anathema for the Spanish party. |
Note 3 | Of the edition 1,500 copies were printed (Arch. 788). |
Note 4 | Listed in M 296, folio 17v ([Summa S. Thomȩ] a⁰ [15]85, f[euilles] 400, [price:] flor. 6), and M 321 (in folio). |
