Note 1 | Contains the study by Floccus on the institutions of Rome (1r-48v), followed by some other studies on the constitutional history of Rome, inspired by or based on Floccus: Joannes Camers, Concordantiae (= references to the sources used by Floccus for his edition) (50r-53r); Pomponius Laetus, De magistratibus et sacerdotibus Romanorum ad M. Panthagatum libri II (55r-68v): Raphael Volaterranus, De magistratibus et sacerdotiis Romanorum commentarii (69r-78r); Henricus Bebelius Iustingensis, De sacerdotiis et magistratibus Romanorum libellum ad reverend. in Christo patrem Georgium Piscatoris, abbatem ad Duplices Aquas (78v-85r). Edited by Egidius Witsius (Wijts) of Bruges. |
Note 2 | The work of Floccus was initially published under the name of Lucius Fenestella, a Roman author of the time of Augustus (first editions: s.l., s.d. [before 1477], and Milan, 1477; many reprints, e.g. by Joannes Gymnicus, Antwerp, 1557: a copy in KBR Royal Library of Belgium). Doubts soon arose about the real author. On this controversy Witsius gives in the foreword to the reader ([5v-8v]) a long and interesting survey. Some scholars - Witsius quotes Coenalis and Nozorenus - supposed the author to be Floccus. Witsius found confirmation of this thesis in a manuscript from the library of Georgius Temsicius, which he could buy at an auction, and which clearly and without doubt gives Floccus as the author. Witsius is the first to have edited the work under the name of the Italian humanist. |
Note 3 | Copies are known with the address of Plantin's Antwerp colleague Guilielmus Silvius (see following no.). As the privilege has been granted to Silvius, it may be assumed that he took the initiative. He must have commissioned Plantin to print the text, but the latter retained for sale a number of copies showing on the title-page his own address. |
Note 4 | According to the colophon the work was finished on 27 January 1561. |
Note 5 | Plantin sold on 18 February 1561 25 copies 'Dom. floccus alias fenestella 8⁰', for 2 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers, to the Lyonese bookseller Jacques du Puy (Arch. 35, folio 122), and on 28 April 1561 12 copies 'Fenestella de magistratibus castigatus, 8⁰', for 1 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers, to Pierre du Pré (Arch. 36, folio 6). |
Note 6 | Listed in M 296, folio 4v (Dominicus Floccus alias Fenestella de magistrat. Rom. etc. in 8⁰, a⁰ 1561, f[euilles] 12, [price:] stuivers 2) and folio 6v (Fenestella alias Dom. floccus, 8⁰, f[euilles] 12, [price:] stuivers 2, a⁰ 1561), and Ms. 164, folios 8v and 13v. |
