Note 1 | Baptism ritual as used by the Christians in Syria at the time of Severus: Syriac text (in Syriac type) with a Latin translation (in italic type), and underneath the transcription in Hebrew type. Edited by Guido Fabricius Boderianus (Le Fèvre de la Boderie). |
Note 2 | In the very interesting dedicatory the editor explains, how, working in Antwerp on the Polyglot Bible, more especially on the Syriac texts, he received from Plantin, sent from Cologne by Daniel Bombergus (Van Bomberghen), an old manuscript of the New Testament, including at the end the ritual of Severus. He started immediately to copy the text, to transcribe it into Hebrew and to translate it into Latin. He found it interesting enough to have the manuscript published, together with a Syriac alphabet to which some extracts from the Gospels as contained in the Cologne manuscript were added. This at the urging of specialists of the Louvain university, who wished to have an elementary manual for the use of the students ('Rogaverant enim nos et hic, et Lovanii vires aliquot percelebres, ac de literis linguisque peregrinis bene meriti, ut aliquid Syriace seorsim a Bibliis Regiis in lucem emitterem, in quo tyrones seipsos exercerent…'). On the Syriacae linguae prima elementa, edited and published in 1572 by Fabricius together with Severus's ritual: see no. cp010219. |
Note 3 | Listed in M 296, folio 17v (Severus Alexandrinus de ritibus Baptismi et de sacra synaxi, in 4⁰, A⁰ -, f[euilles] 19½, Syriace et Latine, [price:] stuivers 8). |
