Note 1 | The first Latin edition of the Epitome, with texts (in verses, including the praefatio) by Hugo Favolius (on this Netherlandish humanist of Italian origin, 1523-1585: BB, III, pages 9-10). Some of the texts are translated from Heyns's Dutch version. |
Note 2 | The only not-oblong edition of the Epitome. The larger maps occupy a full page; the smaller maps are interspersed with the texts. |
Note 3 | This edition must already have been on the market in August 1584, as on the 31th of that month Plantin charged Galle 48 florins Carolus guilders 'Pour l'impression de 24 f⁰ [euilles] de son Theatrum petit en latin à raison de deux florins Carolus guilders la rame' (Arch. 20, folio 146; cf. also Arch. 62 [Journal 1584], folios 85-86, under 25-31 August: 'Philippus Galle doibt pour 24 rames imprimées pour son Theatre en latin epitomiste in 4⁰, contenant 24 f⁰ et chascun f⁰ est de une rame et 1 main de papier à raison de deux florins la rame et la main par dessus') (both texts reproduced in Denucé, I, pages 249-250). This means that of the edition some 500 copies must have been printed. |
Note 4 | From 22 December 1584 onwards, Plantin bought regularly copies from Galle, for which he paid 1 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers a piece (cf. Denucé, I, pages 250 ff.). |
Note 5 | Listed in M 321, sub 1585 (Theatri Orbis Terrarum Enchiridion minoribus tabulis per Philippum Gallaeum exaratum: et Carmine Heroico ex variis Geographis et Poëtis collecto, Per Hugonem Fauolium illustratum. 1585.
