Note 1 | Edition in six volumes of the text and the music of 39 compositions by De Brouck (20 Latin 'moteta', 18 French songs, 1 German song; titles enumerated by Stellfeld, page 47). |
Note 2 | In the colophon is stated that the work was finished on 5 June 1579. The pressman Hans Claes was paid for printing the work at 500 copies from 10 May till 6 June 1579 (Arch. 33, folio 6; detailed by Stellfeld, page 49). |
Note 3 | In order to have his work printed, De Brouck committed himself to take 162 copies at the price of 34 florins Carolus guilders (IOU of 9 July 1579: Arch. 116; published by Stellfield, page 48, and reproduced plate X). The musician promised to pay the sum before May 1580, but on 1 May 1582 he had not yet settled his debt (Arch. 20, folio 47), and very likely never reimbursed Plantin. On the other hand, he seems to have received only 100 copies, instead of 162 (Journal of 1579, 7 July: Arch. 57, folio 97v). |
Note 4 | Listed in M 296, folio 3r (Cantiones 5.6. et 8 vocum Jacobi vanden broeck, [price:] stuivers 22, f[euilles] 44), and M 164, folio 6v. |
Note 5 | Stellfeld, pages 49-52, details the sale of the Cantiones as noted in the Journals from 1579 (11 June) till 1597 (in 1579: 69; 1580: 4; 1582: 27; 1584-85: 3; 1586: 1; 1587: 8; 1588: 1; 1593: 1; 1594: 1; 1597: 1; in all: 116 copies; the sale's price was generally 1 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers, but with exceptions: prices are also noted of 1 florins Carolus guilders; sometimes higher prices were asked, but in these cases it is possible that the difference is made by the value of the bindings). See also Stellfeld, pages 52-54, for references on the edition in other Plantinian catalogues, inventories and records. |
