Illustrations | 1) Woodcut: V. on title-page, 35 × 57: Virgin with Child, with at each side a kneeling man. Within typographical lines, in which typographically set texts: (above.) ME CHRISTE Matris vox iuuet (to the right:) Quas trado puræ Matri lege mēte coronas, (under:) Pro me Parens Natum roga, (to the left:) Hoc Gnati sanctum libro tuteris honorem. 2) Engravings: 15 illustrations, 138 × 90, in 3 series of 5, representing scenes from the Life of the Virgin and the Christ, with above each scene an (engraved) Latin distich and beneath the scene an (also engraved) French quatrain, being the somewhat amplified translation of the distich, the whole within an (engraved) fleuron-border. Above each illustration the typographically printed title: 1st series: L'Annunciation, La Visitation, La Nativité, La Presentation, Le Retrouvement; 2nd series. L'Oraison au Iardin, Le Fouettement, Le Couronnement, Le Portement de la Croix, Le Crucifiement; 3rd series: La Resurrection, L'Ascension, La Mission du S. Esprit, L'Assumption, Le Couronnement. Judging from the style these engravings must have been executed by Pieter van der Borcht, probably from his own designs. The original plates are preserved in the Plantin-Moretus Museum |

Note 1 | In fact only an album with religious illustrations. The literary contribution of d'Esne seems to have been limited to the four-lines French translations of the Latin distichs. Very likely he has also taken the initiative to have the work published and perhaps paid the bill. |
Note 2 | The work was finished in August 1588: in his letter to Franciscus Costerus of 10 August 1588 Plantin tells the Jesuit father 'Misi nuper specimen Mysteriorum Rosarii ex descriptione D. Betencourt' (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1389). On 1 September 1588 he mailed - with other publications - a copy of the work to Joannes Hayus at the Douai University (Arch. 65, folio 116; quoted in Corr., VIII-IX, page 433). |
Note 3 | Listed in M 321 (Les XV mysteres du Rosaire de la sacree vierge Marie en 4e par le sr. de betencourt, 4⁰, f[euilles] -, [price:] stuivers -). |
