Note 1Of this edition two versions were issued: one with copper engraving-illustrations (no copy known) and one with woodcut-illustrations.
Note 2Edition 'ad longum'.
Note 3Plantin in a letter of 4 January 1576 to de Virbiesca notes casually that he was printing a breviary in 8⁰ (Corr., V, no. 690). Some months later he thanks the same de Virbiesca for his advice regarding the in 8⁰ breviary, which the typographer guesses will also sell very well in the Netherlands (letter of 19 April 1576: Corr., V, no. 712). This means that if primarily intended for Spain the breviary could also be brought on the market in the Netherlands. In the first days of June 1576 Plantin hoped to finish the work before the end of the month and declared to be very satisfied with the presentation of the work (letter to Buyssetius, 2 June 1576 [Corr., V, no. 724]: 'Interea namque praeterquam quod valde timeo supra dicta non audeo progredi in editionibus inchoatis ex quibus alioqui sperarem me tibi ante mensem missurum Breviarium in 8⁰ elegantius et commodius (ni fallor) impressum quam quidquam ejus generis quod hactenus ex nostra prodierit officina…'). Very likely the political troubles did postpone the printing of the last quires and the edition was only completed at the end of 1576 or the beginning of 1577. No copies were shipped to Spain.
