Note 1 | An 'ars amandi', in rimes, which, according to the author, he started writing at the demand of a beautiful and noble young lady he met at a wedding. Sixteen books, divided into 4 volumes: in 15 books the author eulogizes the women and advises them in dealing with men; in the 16th and last book he addresses himself to the men, pointing out their duties towards women. In all some 58.000 verses (printed in Civilité-type, but in the 12th book parts in Roman, probably because the stock of civilité-type had momentarily run out). The first book has also the general title for the whole work, which can approximately be translated as 'The plain of Pegasus and the pleasure-garden of the virgins'. |
Note 2 | This dithyrambic 'Laudatory of Women' earned the author great praise and fame. Pegasides Pleyn was often reprinted: in 1608 (Leiden), 1611 (Leiden), 1614-15 (Delft), 1622-23 (Delft) (cf. BB, III, pages 535-538). Houwaert himself wrote something as a continuation: Den handel der amoreusheyt (The commerce of love), published at Brussels in 1583 (another edition, under the same title, but with a quite different text: Rotterdam, 1621) (cf. BB, III, page 538). |
Note 3 | Each of books 2-16 has on the title-page the year 1582, but on the title-page of the first book, being the title-page for the whole work, is stated 1583. Very likely the printing started early in 1582 (the privilege is dated 17 January 1582), but could not be finished before 1583. It is typical that Plantin on the title-page of books 2-8 styled himself 's'Hertoghs drucker' (Printer to the Duke [Francis of Anjou]) whilst in books 9-16 and in the general title only his name is mentioned. He was appointed 'Printer to the Duke' in 1582 but dropped it after the abortive attempt of Francis of Anjou to take Antwerp in January 1583. This can imply that books 2-8 were printed in 1582, books 9-16 and at least the introductory part of book 1 in 1583. Anyway, in an entry in Arch. 20, folio 136, of 31 January 1583 (see further in text) it is stated that the work was still on the presses. |
Note 4 | The manuscript used for composing books 13-16 is still preserved in Museum Plantin-Moretus (M 172: cf. Denucé, Manuscrits, no. 219). |
Note 5 | In Museum Plantin-Moretus are also 16 drawings on wood-blocks, 155 × 118, with the allegorical representations of the 16 books; prepared to be cut but not executed (Van den Wijngaert, Catalogue of the Drawings of Museum Plantin-Moretus [= in manuscript; Dutch text; to be consulted in Museum Plantin-Moretus], no. 128). It may be assumed that the intention was at first to illustrate the work with woodcuts, that the preparatory work was already done, but that finally was decided to have them replaced by copper engravings. The designs of the wood-blocks were followed in minute detail by the copper engraver. Van den Wijngaert supposed the draughtsman of the drawings on the wood-blocks to have been Maarten de Vos, but this is only a guess. |
Note 6 | Another wood-block, with the coat-of-arms of Houwaert, and bearing the monogram of the woodcutter Antoon van Leest, was actually cut (preserved in Museum Plantin-Moretus: HB 8054), but also finally replaced by a similar copper engraving (executed by A. de Bruyn: see further in text). Cf. Van Vinckenroye, I, pages 168-169. |
Note 7 | Joannes Wiericx made of J.B. Houwaert two portraits: the one reproduced in Pegasides pleyn (and in De vier wterste), another which does not seem to have been reproduced and showing the Brussels patrician with in the right hand, pending at a ribbon around the neck, the medallion of the Beggars (Museum Plantin-Moretus: KP 12 C; reproduced from the original plate in Rooses, Musée). It may be assumed that the latter portrait was the original one intended to adorn Houwaert's publications, but that, as the fortunes of war began to change, it was finally decided to replace this politically engaged portrait by a less dangerous one. Cf. also Van Vinckenroye, 1, page 167, n. 10, who opted more for a changing of the attitude of Houwaert towards the Calvinists. |
Note 8 | The coat-of-arms of Houwaert as reproduced in Pegasides pleyn and De vier wterste was cut by Abraham de Bruyn, who was paid on 22 November 1582 2 florins Carolus guilders for 'gesneden de wapen van [de] maechden boek Houwaert' ([for] cutting the coat-of-arms of the virgins book Houwaert) and another 1 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers for drawing 4 'houten formen met schilden' (very likely drawings for 4 blocks of the cartouches) (Arch. 20, folio 87; cf. Van Vinckenroye, I, page 168). |
Note 9 | The other copper engravings were in all probability executed by Joannes Wiericx, whose monogram figures on one of the plates. He was paid 7 florins Carolus guilders on 8 September 1582 'pour la dernière figure de cuivre pour le livre de Houwaert' (Arch. 60, folio 100v) and 12 florins Carolus guilders on 18 January 1583 'lesquels sont pour reste de payement de la figure de Houwaert [= perhaps the second portrait of the author]' (Arch. 61, folio 10v). Houwaert paid also directly 21 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers to Joannes Wiericx, noted in Plantin's ledger on 15 January 1583 on the credit of the author (Arch. 20, folio 136). Rooses, Les frères Wiericx à l'imprimerie plantinienne, 1881, page 8, affirms, but without giving references, that Wiericx was paid for the plates of Pegasides pleyn between January and September 1582 (cf. also Rooses, Musée, page 187). On the problem see also Van Vinckenroye, I, pages 168-169. |
Note 10 | Of Pegasides pleyn 550 copies were printed (Arch. 788). |
Note 11 | Houwaert paid in advance on 15 January 1583 51 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers for an unspecified number of copies 'de son livre des poésies lequel est sur la presse' (Arch. 20, folio 136). |
Note 12 | Listed in M 296, folio 11Ro (Lusthof der maeghden van Houwaert, 4º, f[euilles] 342, aº 83, [price:] florins Carolus guilders 5 stuivers 10), and M 321 (sub 1583; 'contiennent f[euilles] 342 et fig[ures] 33 de cuivre…'). |
