Caesarem Sallustio adscriptae (pages 209-225); In M. Tullium Ciceronem declamatio (pages 225-228); In Sallustium declamatio quae Ciceroni falso tribuitur (pages 229-236). Edited by Ludovicus Carrio. |
Note 2 | The scholia of L. Carrio on Sallustius are published in a separate volume (see no. cp011003 bis), which was normally sold together with the text, but could be obtained separately. About the fact that Plantin published separately text and scholia, cf. the interesting remarks in his letter to H. Ciofanus, 14 May 1580 (Corr., VI, no. 376). |
Note 3 | In the letter to Plantin, 1 March 1579 (on page [3]) (reproduced in Corr., VI, no. 824), Carrio tells that he is sending his text of Sallustius, substantially amended ('Sallustium Crispum multis millibus opera mea meliorem, nunc ad te mitto'), but not his 'castigationes' on which he had worked 18 years ago, but which he could find no more and which for the moment being he does not intend to rewrite as he is making preparations for a journey to France ('Castigationes non mitto: nam et illae, quas ex libris membranaceis et aliis huiuscemodi, ante annos duodeviginti, cum cura digessimus, ad manum non fuere; neque mihi novas scribere totque et tantis auxiliis, clade Lovaniensi, spoliato, quodque in Galliam versus iter pararem, nunc erat volenti, igitur vicem illarum, Criticum meum emendationum Sallustianarum, dis iuvantibus, in tempore dabo'). The 'castigationes' were probably never rewritten. Anyway they may not be identified with the scholia in the completory volume (which are very likely the 'Criticum meum emendationum Sallustianarum' of which Carrio speaks in his letter). |
Note 4 | The dedicatory letter to Guido Laurinus, 29 August 1564 (pages 147-155) shows that as early as 1564 Carrio had been working, if not on the text itself of Sallustius, in any case on collecting the excerpts of the lost works of the Roman historiographer in the writings of other Latin authors. His study was epoch-making (cf. Biographie Nationale [de Belgique], 3, Columns 353-354, sub Carrion). |
Note 5 | In a letter to J. Pamelius, 22-28 August 1579 (Corr., VI, no. 835) Plantin tells casually that Carrio had been in Antwerp some months ago to discuss with Plantin the publication of his Sallustius. |
Note 6 | 'Sallustius cum Lud. Carrionis' is mentioned among the books already printed by the Plantin Press in the long list included by Plantin in his letter to J. Buyssetius, 10 December 1579 (Corr., VI, no. 851, page 115). |
Note 7 | Listed in M 296, folio 17v (Sallustius Carrionis Lud., in 8⁰, 1579, f[euilles] 15, [price:] stuivers 3½; Annotationes Car[rionis], in 8⁰, f[euilles] 16½, [price:] stuivers 4½, [together:] f[euilles] 31½, [price:] stuivers 8). |
