Note 1 Contains: a) Comments on the epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians (pages 3-99); b) A series of refutations (in 67 'questions' [and answers]) of the heretics invoking passages of the epistle to the Galatians (pages 100-423).
Note 2 The publication of the work of the late cardinal has been forced upon Plantin by Cardinal Granvelle, residing at the time in Italy. In a letter of 12 January 1567 to Stephanus Pighius, the cardinal's secretary at Brussels, Plantin is somewhat evasive about the prospects of publishing the 'Commentarius Cardinalis' (Corr., III, no. 338), but in his later letters no more reservations are expressed: Plantin did not wish to hurt Cardinal Granvelle's feelings. Cf. Plantin's letters to de Çayas, 22 June 1567 (Corr., I, no. 43: 'J'envoye ici à V.S. l'indice des livres que j'ay sous la presse, deux desquels, marqués 1.2. sur la marge, m'ont esté envoyés de Rome par Monsigneur le révérendissime Cardinal de Granvelle, avec lectres bien instantes de les vouloir imprimer [= Seripandius and the Virgilius of Fulvius Ursinus] '); to Pierre Daniel, 22 June 1567 (Ibidem, no. 46: same content, but with specific details about the two works, and with the affirmation that the printing had already started); to Alanus Copus, 22 June 1567 (Ibidem, no. 47: same content); to Granvelle, June (?) 1567 (Ibidem, no. 87, page 194: mailing of proofs of the Polyglot Bible 'avec l'espreuve du commentaire sur l'épistre ad Galathas du R. Cardinal Seripandi, que j'espère d'avoir achevé devant un mois'); Granvelle's letter to Plantin, 24 July 1567 (Suppl. Corr., no. 29: 'J'ay veu la preuve du commentaire de feu Monseigneur Siripando sur l'epistre ad Galathas, que me semble bien…'); Plantin to Granvelle, 8 August 1567 (Corr., III, no. 342, page 20: 'Dedans quatre jours sera achevé le commentaire de feu Monsieur Seripandio ad Galathas, du quel j'envoyray quelques exemplaires à Monsieur le Provost d'Aire pour les envoyer à V.S.T., laquelle je supplieray d'excuser les fautes qui s'y trouveront et les vouloir faire corriger sur quelque exemplaire s'il s'en trouve de l'aucteur, car celuy qui nous a esté envoyé estoit fort incorrectement escrit; de sorte qu'il n'y avoit page sans quelques fautes, et quelquefois nous eust-il esté impossible d'en sortir sans l'aide que nous avons prinse des aucteurs qu'il citoit, comme de Damascène et autres aucteurs ecclésiastiques; et principalement de St. Augustin; car à la fois avons-nous trouvé que l'escrivain avait oublié des lignes entières, ayant sauté d'un mot à ung pareil, et qu'ainsi ne se pouvoit trouver aucun sens; si est ce, Monseigneur, que j'espère que les fautes ne s'y trouveront grandes'); to Pighius, secretary of Granvelle at Brussels, 22 August 1567 (Corr., III, no. 344: has sent some time ago three copies of Seripandius to the dean [= Morillon, representative at Brussels of Granvelle, who had to mail these copies to the cardinal] and includes now a copy for Pighius himself; if Pighius wishes he could get more of them; cf. Corr., I, no. 81); Morillon to Granvelle, 17 August 1567 (Suppl. Corr., no. 33: has sent copies of Seripandius to the cardinal); Granvelle to Plantin, 11 September 1567 (Suppl. Corr., no. 36: has forwarded a copy of Seripandius to Bishop Amulio).
Note 3 According to the colophon the printing was finished in August 1567.
Note 4 The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 121, gives the following details about 'Seripandus in Epist. ad Galatas': the wages for composing and printing the first 12 sheets are entered on 16 July 1567, for the last 15 sheets on 28 August 1567. They amount, together with the 3 florins Carolus guilders for the privilege, to 47 florins Carolus guilders 11 stuivers As each copy contains 27 sheets and as 1,250 copies were printed, 70 reams of 'papier à la croix blanche' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders per ream, came to 70 florins Carolus guilders, bringing the overall costs to 117 florins Carolus guilders 11 stuivers
Note 5 Listed in M 296, folio 17v (Seripandius Hier. in ep[isto]las Pauli ad Galathas, A⁰ -, f[euilles] 26½, [price:] stuivers 4½, a⁰ 1567).
