Note 1Comments on Suetonius's Twelve Caesars, bearing as well upon the restitution of the text as upon the explication of that same text and the elucidation of specific details of Roman history, archaeology and prosody; based, besides the study of the classical authors, on the examination of coins (some belonging to Torrentius's own collection) and on inscriptions, the author referring occasionally to marbles he had seen in Italy. Torrentius himself had some manuscripts of Suetonius and studied others, quoting a Vaticanus, a Tornacensis (probably the one used by Erasmus for his edition of Suetonius), a Lovaniensis, a Ferrariensis, besides a manuscript of Lucianus from Verdun and a manuscript of Seneca from St. Jacobus of Liège. This study of Torrentius has been much appreciated by the scholars. Cf. BB, op. cit.
Note 2In the dedicatory to Prunius, the author explains that the work was the result of years of study. From his youth, when studying civil law, he had admired Suetonius for his style as well as for the content so useful for a lawyer. Since then he had continued to gather all that he could find on the Roman historian, visiting 'old libraries' (libraries with old manuscripts), and together with Carolus Langius (on the contribution of Torrentius's friend: BB, V, pages 380-381) he had collated many manuscripts. His study was more specifically intended to complement the Suetonius-edition (with comments) edited by Pulmannus (Plantin, 1574: see no. cp011155), and furthermore the comments by Philippus Beroaldus, Antonius Sabellicus 'and others'.
Note 3The original manuscript of Torrentius's work is preserved in KBR Royal Library of Belgium (Ms. 3526).
Note 4A new edition, together with the text itself of the XII Caesares, was published by the Plantin Press in 1592 (cf. BB, V, page 283).
Note 5The publication is mentioned incidentally in some of Plantin's letters: to Arias Montanus, 4 February 1579 (Corr., VI, no. 820: 'Laevinus Torrentius valet, superiori aestate commentarium ejus in Suetonium impressi, pollicetur se mihi commentaria in Horatium missurum…'); to J. Buyssetius, 10 December 1579 (Ibidem, no. 851, page 114: 'Laevinus Torr[entius] in Suetonium 8⁰' figures among the works published by Plantin in the last two years); to Torrentius, 1 April 1580 (Ibidem, no. 872: 'Vos commentaires in Suetonium ont telement pleu qu'il m'en reste peu d'exemplaires. Parquoy quand il vous plaira envoyer les augmentations je le reimpremeray volontiers in folio…').
Note 6Listed in M 296, folio 3r (Comme [n] t [ari] a Levini Torre[n]t. in Suetonium, 8⁰, 1578, f[euilles] 37, [price:] stuivers 10) and folio 10v, and M 164, folio 6v.
