Note 1 | In 1558, or more specifically for 1558, Plantin published an 'Almanach en francoys' and an 'Almanach en flameng [in Dutch]' (besides an 'Almanach' of Nostradamus: cf. no. 1754). He could note in January 1558 (Arch. 35, folio 9 verso) 'A diverses foys en tout ce moys vendu…3,000 Almanachs tant en francoys qu'en flameng' (including very likely the Almanachs of Nostradamus). He had some difficulties with Ghent competitors, but, by presenting them rather large numbers of his almanachs he could keep the market for him alone. On 26 January 1558 Plantin notes (Arch. 35, folio 8 recto): 'A Jan Laet pour Hendrik van Keere et Cornelis Manilius (= two Ghent printers) p[ar] accord faict avec moy p[ar] led[ict] Lathis et Amy fondeur de lectres (= Ameet Tavernier) au nom des susd[icts] ie doibs bailler 100 Almanachs franch[ois] et 100 Almanachs en flament aud[icts] Henric et Cornelis à ce qu'ilz cessent d'imprimer lesd[icts] Almanachs et en ay livré aud[ict] Latius'. At the end of the same month the operation was repeated for the 'Almanachs de Nostradamus' (Arch. 35, folio 9 verso): 'Item délivré à Henry Van Keere pour faire cesser l'impression des Almanachs de Nostrad.: 100 Almanachs franch [ois] et 100 en flameng.
