Note 1 Collection of 25 allegorical poems in Latin on the use and abuse of riches: on the even pages the text; on the uneven pages the caption, a quotation from the Bible, the illustration, and underneath a four-lines poem.
Note 2 This edition was a joint venture of Plantin and Philip Galle. The transaction 'pour compte du livre de usu et abusu rerum Bernardi Furmeri phrysii' is detailed in Arch. 18, folio 143. The intention was to print 525 copies, but finally only 500 complete copies could be put on the market ('…pour aultant que ne sont venu entiers iusques au 500 [exemplaires] plains'). One half of the edition was for Plantin, the other half for Galle. The finishing of the edition must have been done in Galle's studio, as can be deduced from the fact that it was he who forwarded Plantin's copies to the typographer: 38 at an unspecified time in 1575, 8 on 17 March 1575, 50 on 30 April 1575, 25 on 13 October 1575, 45 on 11 February 1576, 99 on 25 June 1576. Together 265 copies, of which, however, were rendered to Galle, on 30 July 1576, 17 copies, so that finally Plantin received for his part 248 copies. The expenses made for the edition were split in two. Plantin noted to the credit of Galle 156 florins Carolus guilders for the 26 plates (6 florins Carolus guilders A piece; being very likely half of their price), 26 florins Carolus guilders 5 stuivers for printing the illustrations of 125 copies (3,500 prints at 15 stuivers per hundred), and 5 stuivers 'pour le tiltre ascavoir lescripture taillée audit tiltre', to which were later added 31 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers for printing the illustrations of an additional 125 copies (this time at 18 stuivers per hundred), and another 5 stuivers 'pour lescriture du tiltre'. In all 214 florins Carolus guilders 5 stuivers To the debit of Galle were entered 19 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers for 7 reams 8 'mains' of paper (at 2 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers per ream) 'pour imprimer les dites' and 6 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers 'pour limpression et composition dudit' at 15 stuivers per ream; in all 25 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers This means that Plantin had to pay to Galle the difference of 188 florins Carolus guilders 7 stuivers On 11 April 1575 he had already paid to Galle an advance-sum of 78 florins Carolus guilders The remainder was paid later in two installments. It was also duly noted that the plates remained the joint property of the two publishers ('bien entendu que les planches sont encores entre les mains de philippe Galle et sont aluy et a mon pere [= Plantin; the note was made by Plantin's son-in-law, Jan Moretus] p[ar] ensemble').
Note 3 A copy was mailed by Plantin to de Çayas on 20 June 1575 (Corr., IV, no. 636). One copy, worth 14 stuivers, was included in the bales with books shipped on 9 June 1575 to Pierre Boccangelino at Toledo (Suppl. Corr. no. 241, page 273).
Note 4 Listed in M 296, folio 4v (De usu et abusu rerum 4⁰ cum fig[uris] aeneis, 1575, f[euilles] 7, [price:] stuivers 14) and folio 19v, and M 164, folio 9r.
