Note 1 | Collection of French poetry in 4 'tomes', each itself divided into 'livres': I. 'Les ieunesses' (pages 1-216, divided into six 'livres'; the 6th 'livre', pages 185-216, with a number of poems addressed to and in honour of members of the French royal family and French personalities, including poets); II. 'Les Meslanges' (pages 217-767, divided into 7 'livres'; some poems also dedicated to or in honour of French personalities; 5th 'livre': 'Imitations, et traductions' of classical Greek and Latin authors; 6th 'livre': 'Imitations, et traductions' of Ariosto; 7th 'livre': 'Imitations, et traductions' of the Bible); III. 'Les Amours' (pages 769-1359; divided into: La Marguerite [pages 771-1081; 4 'livres'], La Severe [pages 1083-1273; 3 'livres'], La Grasinde [pages 1275-1359; 2 'livres'); IV. 'Les discours poétiques' (pages 1361-1503; divided into 2 'livres'). |
Note 2 | In 'Christofle Plantin aus lecteurs' the printer explains that this is the first volume of the 'Premières Oeuvres Françoyses du Sieur de la Iessée', and that he has the intention to publish the two remaining volumes 'à la première commodité', detailing in broad outline their content ('Elles contiennent plusieurs Livres d'Odes, Hymnes, Elegies, Eclogues, Odes-Satyres, Satyres, Contr'-Amours, Tragedies, et Epitaphes. Il y a aussi quelques petis Poëmes composez sur divers subiectz de la Saincte Escriture, et quatre ou cinq livres en prose Françoyse'). Owing to the political difficulties the Duke of Anjou met at Antwerp (unsuccessful attempt to seize the city, known as the 'French Fury', January 1583), causing his sudden departure and that of his followers (including de la Jessée), the project of publishing the two remaining volumes by the Plantin Press must have abandoned. De la Jessée does not seem to have found another publisher for these parts of his 'oeuvres françoyses'. |
Note 3 | Of the 'Oeuvres de Jessée' 58 copies still remained in stock in the Plantin Press in 1642 (cf. L. Voet, The Golden Compasses, II, page 460). |
Note 4 | Listed in M 296, folio 14r (Oeures poëtiques de Jan de la Jessée, 1583, 4º, f[euilles] 194, [price:] florins Carolus guilders 3), and M 321. |
