Note 1 | In the foreword, in the form of a letter to Plantin, dated Utrecht, 16 January 1582 (reproduced in Corr., VII, no. 975), Burchius explains how, when studying law twelve years ago (1569-1570?) at the University of Padua, he was asked, with many others, by Octavianus Sanmarcus, ‘patritius Neapolitanus’, to write eulogies in honour of Hieronyma Columna. They were executed in Greek, Latin, and Italian, and formed so great a mass, that, when returning home, Burchius, to save place, took only with him the Latin poems. They were interesting enough to be published, and after all those years Burchius sent them now to Plantin for being printed, adding a number of his own Latin poems. |

Note 3 | It is not known to whom the copy in Museum Plantin-Moretus has belonged, but on page [124] is, in a hand of the 16th or early 17th century, the text of a letter of Plantin to Burchius, 23 January 1582, the draft of which has not been preserved in the Plantinian records (reproduced in Corr., VII, no. 976): the typographer tells Burchius that he has received some days ago the manuscript. He can not publish it at his own expenses, owing to the difficult times, but if someone is prepared to buy some hundreds of copies and advance the money to pay the paper, he is willing to print it. Burchius has to let him know if he agrees or wishes to have the manuscript returned…The letter is in agreement with Plantin’s publishing methods in those years and may considered to be genuine (perhaps copied from the original in Burchius’s possession?). It may also be surmised that Burchius or his friends had indeed to advance money before Plantin started printing the poems. |
