Note 1 | First known Dutch edition; translated from Plantin's French edition of 1557. |
Note 2 | The Dutch text is set in Roman and not in black letter as was customary in the Netherlands at that time. A revolutionary act of Plantin, but probably arising more out of ignorance (or lack of convenient black letter-type?) than inspired by any desire to go against the traditional rules. Anyway, the 1561-reprint was set in Gothic. |
Note 3 | A copy of the 'Secrets flamenc' was sold to Gerard de Jode on 6 April 1558 (Arch. 35, folio 20 verso). |
Note 4 | Listed in M 296, folio 18 recto (Secreten van Alexis duytsch 1558, f[euilles] 25, [price:] stuivers 3½). |
Note 5 | Paul Valekema Blouw mentions that the vignette on page 8 verso is Plantin’s large diamond-shaped arabesque vignette and contains ten initials in all, some of which are repetitions. (Blouw, Dutch Typograhpy, 254) |
