Note 1 Dictionary classified according to subjects (e.g. De re libraria, et librorum materia; De homine et partibus humani corporis, etc.), with Latin catchwords, the explanation of the catchword in Latin, and the translation of the word in Greek, German, Dutch, French, Spanish, and occasionally English. On this work, its content, importance, and influence, see C.M.S. Rademaker, 'De Nomenclator van Hadrianus Junius' in Hermeneus, Maandblad voor de Antieke Cultuur, Rotterdam, 39, 1968, pages 217-227.
Note 2 According to the colophon the printing was finished on 14 February 1567.
Note 3 The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 69, gives the following details about 'Nomenclator Hadriani Junii': under 27 May 1564 Plantin notes 'Donné au sig[neu]r Hadr. Junius estant par trois nuits logé ceans et y ayant prins 4 repas, donné disie 6 aulnes veloux fin: 27 florins Carolus guilders' (this expense is noted in Arch. 3, folio 12, under 27 May 1564, as 'Hadrianus Junius debiteur par veloux florins Carolus guilders 27. J'ay achapté 6 aulnes de veloux pour donner aud[ict] Junius pour la copie de son Nomenclator qu'il m'a promis pour le veloux d'un saye que i'ay achapté d'Erasme Pesteau'; this means thus that in May 1564 Junius spent some time in Plantin's house and that, on his promise to forward the manuscript of his Nomenclator, Plantin bought him 6 ells of velvet, worth 27 florins Carolus guilders). The printing itself started only in the middle of 1566. The first wages for composing and printing are entered on 8 June 1566 (for quires A-F). Then there was an interruption, but when the printing was resumed, it continued with leaps: quires G-L on 8 September 1566, quires M-V on 25 October 1566, quires X-Z and a-c on 23 November 1566, quires d-n and * on 19 January 1567, quires o-r on 8 February 1567. The wages totaled 132 florins Carolus guilders 9 stuivers As each copy has 44 sheets and as 1,550 copies were printed, 141 reams of 'papier petit bastard' were used (including 4 reams 10 'mains' of 'imperfections'), which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers per ream, came to 197 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers Other expenses included, besides the gift, worth 27 florins Carolus guilders, to the author, 28 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers 'pour l'escritture dudict livre à M. P[ierre] Kerkhovius' (entered under 8 September 1566) and 14 florins Carolus guilders 'pour la faceon de la table à Kerkovius' (entered under 8 February 1567). This brought the overall expenses for the Nomenclator to 399 florins Carolus guilders 3 stuivers; consequently 'revient à peu moins de 5½ stuivers la piéce'.
Note 4 The part of Kerkhovius - and the wages he received - are somewhat more detailed in Arch. 31, folio 91: on 20 March [1566] he was paid 6 florins Carolus guilders 2½ stuivers 'sur l'escritture de Nomenclator' 'et accordé à luy de payer tant pour l'escritture que pour la (le ?) confrent (? = checking) des langages estrangers 7 stuivers [la feille]' (meaning thus that Kerkhovius had to transcribe Junius's manuscript in a more legible way, and at the same time had to check the translated words; for which he would be paid 7 stuivers per sheet). On 17 June 1566 he received another sum of 7 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers, and finally, on 5 July 1566, 15 florins Carolus guilders 'pour reste de l'escritture de Nomenclator', being in all 283 'feillets en tout à 8 stuivers le feillet' (meaning thus that the fee of 7 stuivers per page initially agreed upon, had been increased to 8 stuivers per page [or sheet]). Kerkhovius was thus paid in all 28 florins Carolus guilders 6½ stuivers for 'l'escritture'. He is furthermore noted in Arch. 31 at an unspecified date (after 20 December 1566) to have received 10 florins Carolus guilders and then again 4 florins Carolus guilders 'pour Index Nomenclator'.
Note 5 Interesting information about the genesis of the publication is to be found in a letter from Plantin to Sambucus, 12 January 1566 (Suppl. Corr., no. 13): Junius did not sent his translation of Eunapius (= after a manuscript belonging to Sambucus) notwithstanding Plantin's frequent and urgent pleas, but there were excuses: 'Vray est qu'il a esté aucunnement empesche a son Nonius Marcellus et depuis a son Nomenclator duquel il m'a ia delivre une partie de lexemplaire ascavoir quelque 40 cahiers et ne reste plus ainsi qu'il m'a escrit de long temps quenviron 7 cahiers lesquels il m'a promis envoyer de bref et moy de le commencer incontinent que i'auray lentiere copie et non pas devant a cause qu'il m'est tousiours mal succede davoir commence aucun livre devant qu'avoir toute la copie en mon pouvoir'.
Note 6 On 15 February 1567 Plantin tells de Çayas that he has finished the printing of 'Nomenclator omnium rerum, qui sont tous les noms des choses en latin et en grec rédigés par classes et expliqués en allemant, flameng, françois, italian, espagnol et quelquefois anglois' (Corr., I, no. 22). A copy of the 'Nomenclator Adriani Junii' was shipped to de Çayas on 31 May 1567 (Corr., I, no. 32).
Note 7 Some of the copies received a title-page with Plantin's Paris imprint (see following no.).
Note 8 This first edition is not listed in M 296.
