Note 1 | Same text as the 1588 Manuale catholicorum. |
Note 2 | In the Plantinian catalogues this 24mo edition is entered under the year 1588: very likely it was already finished at the end of that year. |
Note 3 | In his letter to Simon Verepaeus, 31 August 1588 (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1400; already quoted in no. 890), Plantin, after announcing the mailing of a number of copies of the 1588 in 16mo edition, asks Verepaeus to formulate as soon as possible his remarks as Plantin intends to bring on the market another illustrated edition in a smaller format ('Te autem vehementer rogo ut tua cum oportunitate mihi significes num quid adhuc in dicti Manuali impressione desideres, alian etenim editionem meditor minori forma oblonga etiam cum figuris in quibus si quid videas mutandum, addendum, detrahendum, quaeso significa et indica si quid sit in quo tibi officium praestare queam.'). |
Note 4 | A number of copies appeared with intaglio-illustrations (as described in this no.), another number with woodcut-illustrations (see following no.). This is clearly stated in the catalogues. Ms. 296, folio 11v, specifies: '[Manuale catholicorum P. Canisii] In 24⁰, 1588, f[euilles] 5½, c[um] fig[uris] [= woodcuts] stuivers 3; fig[uris] aeneis [= intaglio] stuivers 6; rouge et noir'. A similar entry in M 321, sub 1588. |
