Description |
An exhibition centered around nine Italian ketubbot, 17th–19th C, discovered during a routine inventory of the Potocki Palace in 2010. The documents originally belonged to the Lvov-based hematologist and private collector Marek Reichenstein, whose widow donated them to the Jewish Museum. Five other items, probably originating from the Jewish museum as well, were found with the ketubbot: a printed childbirth amulet (Italy, ca. 1800), a decorative page entitled “Avodat ha-Leviyyim” [Levite’s Worship] (Lvov, 1929/30), a papercut mizrach (Ukraine(?), 1928), a paper with various Yiddish scripts (Lvov region, 1858), and a plan of the Temple (Europe, 19th C). Introductory essay on the discovery of these items (Natalka Filevych). Two central essays describe the personal history and collection of Marek Reichenstein (Sergei R. Kravtsov), and the history and decoration of ketubbot (Shalom Sabar). Translation of a ketubbah text from Modena, 1771 by Shalom Sabar. Detailed catalog entries for each exhibit. 14 items. |
