Jewish history in Surinam and Curaçao over a period of some four hundred years. Introduction by Julie-Marthe Cohen. 10 richly-illustrated historical essays relating to the Caribbean’s Sephardic and Portuguese Jewish populations, Jews in New Amsterdam, Jewish involvement in slavery, etc. Discussion of synagogues and cemeteries in Surinam as “autonomous architecture and landscapes”, pp. 137–146. Brief section on “Personal piety: donations”, pp. 146–148, featuring a few Torah ornaments. Images of synagogue exteriors and interiors throughout. Interviews with Surinamese and Curaçaoan Jews presented between chapters. The exhibition also included portrait films from the project “Suri-Jewish”, in which Dutch people of Surinamese descent describe how Jewish culture influences their identity today.
