Description |
Photographs of Polish Jews taken in the inter-war period by the famous singer, writer and music connoisseur Menachem Kipnis. Like Salomon An-sky before him, Kipnis traveled to a myriad of towns and shtetls, using his skills as an amateur but artistic photographer to document a way of life, and in fact a people, on the verge of its disappearance/destruction. Many of the photographs were taken as part of Kipnis’ journalistic work for the Forward. Five essays on Kipnis, his work, and the history of Polish-Jewish photography (Adam Mazur). Captioned photographs. Circa 100 items. |
