Description

A rare presentation of treasures from the Museum’s library, amidst an extensive discussion of the Collection’s origins, development, and principal figures. Sixteen brief essays trace the 200-year history of the Collection, from Anton Schmid’s donation to the Jewish community of 133 Hebrew volumes printed at his press, to the formation and expansion of the Library, its closure and fate during the Nazi era, its post-Holocaust struggles, and its reopening 20 years prior to this exhibition. Includes the essays “Origins of Hebrew letterpress printing in Vienna—Kurzböck and Hrachanzky” (Sabine Frank-Moser, Domagoj Akrap), “Anton Schmid—printer and personality”, “Moses Rath—closure of the library and dispersal of its contents”, “Leopold Moses and the destruction of the Jewish library”, “Restitution of the first Rabbinic Bible by Daniel Bomberg” (all by Domagoj Akrap), etc. No itemized listing.
