Description

The impact of synagogue architecture and decoration on the works of El Lissitzky and Frank Stella, and the dialogue between them. Rare photographs and drawings by architect Alois Breyer of now-destroyed Eastern European wooden synagogues depict the original structures and demonstrate how Lissitzky and Stella’s geometric abstractions transform the language, narrative and beauty of the synagogues into a modern and contemporary idiom. Introductory essay by Batsheva Goldman Ida. Exhibits presented in three sections: Abstract Drawings (Stella, Lissitzky), Had Gadya (Lissitzky’s original series, and Stella’s artistic response to it), and Wooden Synagogues (Lissitzky’s early drawings, Breyer’s drawings and albumen prints, and Hermann Sruck’s albumen prints). 13 synagogues featured. Descriptive captions. No itemized listing.
