A treasure trove of books, historical documents, maps and other items recalling Jewish life around the Atlantic. All items selected from the Library’s recently-acquired Kaplan Collection, an extraordinary assemblage of more than 11,000 items documenting the commercial, social, religious political and cultural ties that connected Jews and the general public during the 16th–19th C. Monumental catalog with Prologue “The Path from a Collector to a Collection” by Arnold Kaplan, and five essays on: the exhibition and the Kaplan Collection (Arthur Kiron), Atlantic Jewish history (Aviva Ben-Ur), 19th-century American Jews and religion (Jonathan D. Sarna), American Jews and business (Adam Mendelsohn), and Victorian Jewish trade cards in the Kaplan Collection (Dianne Ashton). Exhibition checklist, including one kiddush cup, printed ketubbot and a print showing a synagogue in Charleston, South Carolina. Brief descriptive entries. 126 items. |
