A monumental examination of the ideological stakes and key moments in Moses’ life, as presented in art from Antiquity to the 20th C. The exhibition highlighted the competition between Jewish, Catholic and Protestant imagery in Western culture in Europe, the United States and in Israel, and explored the fascination Moses has exercised on European artists. 10 essays, including those on Moses in Jewish thought (Jean-Christophe Attias), Antique and Medieval representations of Moses in Jewish and Christian art (Sonia Fellous), Moses in Zionist iconography (Yigal Zalmona), and the relationship between American Jews and Blacks (Stephen Berkowitz). Exhibition material in 11 sections, with section VI addressing “Moses in the Jewish Iconographic Tradition”, and including a variety of ceremonial objects. Basic listing. 142 items. |
