Description

An attempt to reconstruct a picture of rural Hungarian Jewish life in its pre-Holocaust setting, using material from the Museum’s collections. The theme was presented through local “case studies” which explored the day-to-day lives of Hungary’s pre-war Jewish population, its relationship to the Magyar majority, the distinguishing features of its unique culture, and the possible courses for its community (straightforward or labyrinthine) in terms of tradition and modernity, and, finally, elements of Jewish culture in Hungary that have survived until today. Catalog in 10 sections, with text and images relating to customs, costume, synagogues, holidays, kashrut, death and mourning, etc. Descriptive captions. No itemized listing.
