Inscriptions from 23 painted synagogues in Eastern Europe, grouped, analyzed and presented according to 5 categories: 1. liturgical texts (prayers), 2. sayings of Chazal [the Sages] on the importance of communal prayer, proper behaviour, and the giving of tzedakah, 3. biblical passages on the synagogue as a miniature Temple and meeting place for Man and the Divine, 4. dedicatory inscriptions, 5. artists’ signatures. General introduction to painted synagogues, followed by discussion of each category of inscription. No itemized listing. |
