Description

A traveling exhibition on Swabian synagogues, sponsored by the Netzwerk Historische Synagogenorte in Bayerisch-Schwaben. Historical photographs, drawings and blueprints document 15 synagogues, the unusually large number of which indicates the special status of Jewish communities in this region. Introduction by Benigna Schönhagen. Brief texts on each synagogue, and on topics such as: early synagogue construction, Torah ornaments, Swabian-style synagogues, synagogues during the period of Emancipation, new synagogues in the cities, and the destruction of synagogues. Individual essays on synagogue worship in times of change (Henry B. Brandt), Jewish life in Swabia (Rolf Kießling), synagogue architecture in Bavarian Swabia (Ulrich Knufinke) and the handling of Swabian synagogues after 1945 and their current usage (Otto Lohr).
