A monumental study of the role played by Jews, both as subjects and artists, in the Orientalist movement of the 19th–20th C. General introduction by Laurence Sigal-Klagsbald. Four essays on: the presence of Jews in Orientalist works (Christine Peltre), Orientalist costume and its significance (Alexis Merle du Bourg), nascent Zionist art and the search for Hebrew identity (Yigal Zalmona), and the place of the Jew in Eastern studies in the 19th–20th C (Perrine Simon-Nahum). Presentation of works according to the exhibition’s main themes: depictions of Jews in Muslim lands, images of the Holy Land, biblical themes in Oriental dress, historical events in Oriental dress, and 1920’s Zionist art (including works by Nachum Gutman, Ephraim Lilien, Boris Shatz and Lesser Ury, et al.).
