A monumental catalog and exhibition illuminating the epochal changes and surprising continuities seen in the artistic traditions of the southern provinces of the Byzantine Empires during the 7th–9th centuries—the period during which this Byzantine stronghold was transformed into a critical part of the Islamic world. Catalog in three main sections, Byzantium, Commerce, and Islam, each with several scholarly essays and extensive entries on each exhibit. The transition of Jewish culture from the world of Christian Rome to that of the Islamic Empire is discussed in “Jews and Judaism Between Byzantium and Islam” (Steven Fine, pp. 102–116, cat. nos. 69–78). Particular attention given to the synagogue of Na’aran, as an exemplar for these changes, and Jewish and Karaite illuminated manuscripts. 193 items. |
