Description |
A single catalog covering two exhibitions held at the Israel Museum, both dealing with depictions of North African Jewry from the mid-19th C until the 1920’s. The first section relates to the 2007 exhibition “Out of North Africa: Photographs of Jewish Life from the Gérard Lévy Collection” (Nissan N. Perez, curator, 27 March–30 June 2007), which showed how North African Jews were portrayed in Orientalist photographs. The second part accompanies the current exhibition “The Jews of Tangier: Orientalist Drawings by Dehodencq” (Shlomit Steinberg, curator), which presented the same subject through the graphic works of a little-known French Romantic painter, Alfred Dehodencq. The catalog’s three articles discuss “The Jewish Maghreb: From Fantasy to Documentation” (Nissan N. Perez), “Out of North Africa” (Alia Ben Ami), and “Labor of Love: Alfred Dehodencq in Tangier” (Shlomit Steinberg). No itemized listing. |
