Description

19 exquisite Hebrew illuminated manuscripts and 5 printed books from the collections of the Vatican Library and several British institutions. Introduction by Robin Navrozov highlights several of the manuscripts displayed, and emphasizes the exhibition’s wider goal of exploring links between faiths. Gianfranco Ravasi’s essay briefly recounts the significance of Biblical Scriptures in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Afterword by Simon Schama declares that this glorious display will “kill off the cliché” that Jews, due to the Second Commandment, have throughout the ages been hostile to artistic imagery. Each of the objects is thoroughly described, with details from 9 of them reproduced on a set of 17 color postcards enclosed within the catalog’s slipcover. 25 items.
