Description |
Feature exhibit of the month: a carved wooden object that identified the seat that the Vilna Gaon had occupied in the congregation. The original seat-marker, similar to this one, was produced shortly after the Vilna Gaon’s death in 1797, but was destroyed when the synagogue was razed by fire. This replacement marker was created in 1868 when the synagogue was re-built, and hung in its original place. Exhibition text describes and contextualizes the piece. 1 item. |
