The development of synagogue music, principally in Europe, during the late 18th–20th C. Composed in the wake of the Reform movement, the music was intended for cantor, choir and the newly-permitted organ, and was strongly influenced by contemporary Kunst—and church music. Extensive essay on the history of Jewish liturgical music, with particular attention paid to this later period, its leading figures and centers.
